A routine traffic stop in Danville in early June turned anything but routine when officers say they pulled two firearms from a vehicle, including an unserialized AR‑15‑style rifle. Police report that a loaded magazine and a Ruger handgun were also recovered after an officer spotted what appeared to be a firearm under the driver’s seat. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and multiple weapons offenses and was taken into county custody. Danville police say the investigation is still in progress.
According to the Danville Police Department, a patrol officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop in June, then conducted a search of the vehicle after seeing what looked like a firearm under the driver’s seat. The town of Danville lists traffic enforcement activity for June 7-13 in its weekly blotter for that period.
What Officers Recovered
Two weapons were recovered during a traffic stop, the department wrote in a Danville Police Department Facebook post. According to that post, officers located an unserialized AR‑15‑style rifle, a loaded magazine and a Ruger pistol during the search of the vehicle. Police say the case remains an active investigation.
Charges And Booking
The department said the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and on allegations that include being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing an unserialized firearm. The suspect was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, the county’s primary intake jail. Under California law (California Legislature, Penal Code 29800), convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms, and violations are charged as felonies.
Why This Matters
Unserialized "ghost" guns and partially completed receivers have been turning up in traffic stops and search warrants across the Bay Area in recent years, making it harder for investigators to trace firearms and build cases. Research and state reports show an uptick in recoveries and a push for tighter regulation.
Danville police say they will release additional details as the investigation moves forward and have not publicly identified the driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Danville Police Department’s non-emergency line.
