A deadly head-on collision on FM 121 between Tioga and Gunter near Calk Road on Wednesday turned a busy rural connector into a standstill, leaving one person dead and four others injured. The highway stayed shut for more than three hours as emergency crews and state troopers worked the scene, routing traffic around a stretch that locals rely on every day.
Two pickup trucks collided head-on, and state troopers confirmed one patient died and four people suffered injuries. Emergency responders moved quickly to get the victims out: two patients were taken by ambulance to local facilities, while medical helicopters flew two others to area hospitals. Crews then focused on clearing wreckage and debris so the road could reopen, according to KTEN.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, with troopers still piecing together what led to the violent impact on the two-lane farm-to-market road.
FM 121's recent safety record
This is not the first serious incident on that stretch of FM 121. In June 2025, a collision at FM Spur 121 spilled roughly 100 gallons of diesel and required a prolonged cleanup, snarling traffic and keeping hazmat crews busy. Local outlets have repeatedly covered wrecks along the corridor, raising uncomfortable questions about safety on busy rural connectors in the Texoma area. County planners point to systemic risks
Grayson County planners have already flagged segments of FM 121 among several corridors with rising crash rates, and a 2022 Grayson County Safety and Operations Strategic Plan lists FM 121 as a priority for targeted countermeasures. The plan recommends measures such as improved signing and marking, shoulder widening and better lighting to reduce roadway-departure and head-on collisions. Those recommendations are laid out in the Grayson County Safety and Operations Strategic Plan.
For now, state troopers continue to investigate the latest crash and have not released the names of those involved. Officials did not immediately provide further details, according to KTEN.
