A single-vehicle crash on Saturday afternoon shut down a major transition ramp near Tempe and left one person dead, tangling traffic for drivers trying to move from the Red Mountain Freeway to the Pima Freeway. The collision happened around 1 p.m. on the westbound Loop 202 ramp to northbound Loop 101, officials said. Troopers and emergency crews closed off the ramp while they worked the scene, triggering backups across the East Valley. Authorities urged drivers to steer clear of the area while crews handled the wreckage.
Mesa Fire and Medical crews arrived to find a heavily damaged vehicle on the ramp, and the lone occupant inside was pronounced dead, according to AZFamily. The Arizona Department of Public Safety told the outlet that troopers shut the ramp so they could conduct their investigation. AZFamily also published photos credited to the Arizona Department of Transportation that showed the ramp closure and debris scattered across the lanes.
Traffic and detours
The ramp from westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) is a crucial connector for East Valley commuters and a trouble spot when it goes offline, since delays can quickly spill onto nearby surface streets. The Arizona Department of Transportation regularly issues travel alerts and has noted recent work along the Loop 202 and Loop 101 corridors that can compound the impact of any closure. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes while the ramp remained blocked, and local traffic cameras and 511 updates showed backups building on the connecting ramps as crews cleared the scene.
Investigation underway
Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers were leading the investigation into what caused the crash, and no additional details about the victim or any potential charges had been released by Saturday evening, AZFamily reports. Troopers typically continue their work after the scene is cleared and may release further information through a DPS spokesperson or local law enforcement in the coming days. This is a developing story and we will update with official statements as they become available.
