A stretch with past crashes and active road work
Maynardville Highway (State Route 33) has seen serious collisions before, including a fatal multi-vehicle wreck reported in mid-2025. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has also been carrying out widening and related construction on SR 33, issuing traffic shift alerts in June 2026 as crews work along the corridor, which officials say can change normal traffic patterns.
Investigators have released few details so far; WVLT noted that the story is developing and advised readers to check for updates. Motorists traveling in north Knox County are being urged to heed the closure and use alternate routes while the Tennessee Highway Patrol continues its investigation.
