A familiar Denver sports voice is headed to court after prosecutors accused him of indecent exposure to a child, following a nanny-cam recording that allegedly showed him masturbating near a sleeping child he was babysitting. Todd Romero, a former 9News and Altitude TV sportscaster, was arrested in March and has an arraignment set for next month.
The case surfaced publicly on Friday in a report by Westword, which reviewed an arrest report and reported that Douglas County prosecutors charged Romero with felony indecent exposure to a child. Romero did not respond to the outlet’s questions, and the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office offered no comment.
The alleged incident happened on January 19 at a home in the Parker area, according to the arrest report. Police responded after the child’s parents reported concerning footage from a Nanit Smart Baby Monitor, which allegedly captured Romero exposing himself and masturbating near the sleeping child.
Investigators contacted Romero three days later, and the report says he acknowledged that the parents had caught the conduct on camera. He reportedly told police he had been babysitting the child two or three times a week for about six months, described the parents as family friends, and said he had no ill intent toward the child.
Romero attributed the incident to exhaustion and severe pain from a chronic neck injury, telling investigators that lying on a flat floor helped his neck. He also said he viewed adult pornography on his cellphone for inspiration rather than looking at the child, while a phone search found visits to adult pornography websites but no timestamps confirming what he was viewing during the incident.
Romero Was A Familiar Face In Denver Sports
Romero built a lengthy Colorado broadcasting career before the case. A Denver Nuggets media guide identifies him as a Denver native and 1986 University of Denver graduate who worked at KUSA-TV from 1995 through 1999 before later covering sports in Kansas City and Florida.
He joined Altitude in 2012 and handled coverage involving the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and college sports. Altitude laid him off in October 2023, and a jury later sided with the network in a discrimination lawsuit Romero had filed over his employment.
Arraignment Set For August 24 In Douglas County
The Colorado Judicial Branch lists Romero’s arraignment in case 2026CR234 for 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 24, in Douglas County Court. The proceeding will address the criminal charge and next steps; it will not determine guilt.
Colorado law makes indecent exposure a class 6 felony in specified circumstances when an adult knowingly exposes themselves while a child under 15 is in view and the person is more than four years older than the child, according to the Colorado General Assembly. Westword reported that the charge carries a potential sentence of 12 to 18 months in jail, one year of parole, and fines of up to $100,000.
The allegations remain unresolved in court, and the child’s identity and age have not been made public. Romero is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
