What started as a routine look at a couple of mopeds on a Dorchester sidewalk ended with a man in custody and a loaded handgun pulled from a front yard on Sunday night, according to Boston police.
District B-3 officers on directed patrol in the area of Blue Hill Avenue and Wales Street spotted two mopeds stopped on the sidewalk with no registration plates, police said. One rider also was not wearing a helmet. When officers approached, they say 37-year-old Eric Cruz of Dorchester adjusted his waistband in a way they read as possibly hiding a weapon, then took off running.
As Cruz fled, officers reported seeing him throw an object into the front yard of a nearby home, where it hit the building with a metallic sound. Police say they recovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a loaded magazine and additional ammunition from the yard. An attached OCR transcript in the department’s post identifies the firearm as a Smith & Wesson frame A531079.
Cruz was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after the brief chase, then placed under arrest. He faces multiple charges, including carrying a loaded firearm without a license (fourth offense) and unlawful possession of ammunition, according to a Facebook post from Boston Police Department (Official).
