The 3 a.m. chaos on East Clayton Street drew a multi-agency response and ended with a 19-year-old in handcuffs, while detectives kept working to figure out what touched off the shooting.
Shots Reported On East Clayton Street
Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of East Clayton Street at about 3:05 a.m. after multiple callers reported shots fired. Investigators later determined that several different calibers of firearms had been used and that multiple storefronts were hit. No injuries were reported, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Arrest And Booking
With help from the University of Georgia Police Department, authorities arrested 19-year-old Damian Jon’Marion Swint on Sunday morning and booked him into the Athens-Clarke County jail. The county's online jail roster shows a July 5 booking for Swint and lists aggravated assault among the charges, according to Athens-Clarke County jail records. Investigators say the case remains open as they sort through evidence and witness statements.
Charges Police Say He Faces
Police have charged Swint with aggravated assault, reckless conduct, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a weapon during the commission of certain felonies, carrying a weapon inside a school safety zone and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Officials have not released a motive or said whether other suspects might still be at large. Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue formal indictments as investigators continue reviewing the case.
Downtown Businesses Took The Hit
Several East Clayton Street storefronts were left with shattered glass and visible bullet damage after the shooting. Some eyewitnesses reported that the flare-up happened near Bad Moon Bar. Police said the damage was concentrated along the commercial strip, and local outlets reported crews starting cleanup and damage assessments, as detailed by Atlanta News First. No customers or staff were reported hurt, but business owners and residents voiced alarm over the sudden burst of gunfire and what it could mean for downtown nightlife.
