A downtown Boston building shed part of its facade Wednesday, sending chunks of concrete onto the sidewalk and roadway below. The collapse happened near a busy intersection, but the close call ended without reported injuries.
The incident occurred near Pearl and High streets at a four-story building, with debris scattered in front of the structure, according to WHDH. The station reported that no one was hurt.

The intersection falls within the broader Richardson Block, a group of historic commercial buildings that the City of Boston identifies around Pearl and High streets. A historic setting adds an extra preservation wrinkle to whatever repairs or stabilization work comes next.

The latest collapse is not the first recent scare involving falling masonry in Boston. In May, bricks dropped from a North End facade onto the sidewalk near Salem Street, prompting a safety inspection and leaving no one injured, as reported by Hoodline.
A Boston City Council record also points to a July 2025 facade collapse in East Boston, along with other incidents involving falling building materials. The document called for a hearing on the city's facade-inspection practices, 311 complaint follow-up, and the protective measures used around damaged buildings, according to the Boston City Council.
The initial report did not identify what caused the downtown failure, whether any occupants were displaced, or how long the sidewalk and roadway would remain affected. Those details will likely determine whether Wednesday's collapse was a one-off maintenance problem or another warning sign for Boston's aging masonry streetscape, but for now, the most important detail is the one that did not happen: nobody was hit.
