A Canadian County sheriff's deputy shot a man after a short pursuit in El Reno on Tuesday night, authorities said. The man was taken to a hospital, and as of late Tuesday his condition had not been released. No deputies were hurt during the encounter.
According to KOCO, the brief vehicle chase wound through downtown El Reno and ended on Russell Street near Bickford Avenue. Sheriff Chris West told the station that one of his deputies fired during the encounter and that the man was then transported to a hospital. Officials have not publicly identified him, and KOCO reports that no Canadian County deputies were injured at the scene.
OSBI steps in to investigate
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed on its website that it is assisting the Canadian County Sheriff's Office with the ongoing probe. The agency notes that "OSBI special agents investigate major crimes and assist when requested by a statutory requestor," a role that typically means an independent look at officer-involved use-of-force incidents. OSBI materials explain that agents collect evidence and interview witnesses before any charging decisions are made.
