A driver died early Wednesday after a vehicle caught fire during a crash in Kansas City, Kansas. Police said no one else was inside the vehicle when officers arrived near Hutton Road and Hollingsworth Road. Kansas Department of Transportation traffic count maps state that "The traffic counts shown on this layer represent estimates of the Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) for the most recent full year on county and city roads," which reporters can consult for AADT at Hutton and Hollingsworth. Wyandotte County's Maps & GIS office notes that "GSS maintains the real estate parcel map for Wyandotte County and provides Geographic Information System (GIS) expertise and general mapping-related services," which can be used to check land use and lighting near Hutton Road and Hollingsworth Road.
According to KSHB 41, officers were called to the area at about 1 a.m. and found the vehicle burning. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and Kansas City, Kansas, police opened an investigation.
Police Have Not Released More Crash Details
Investigators have not publicly identified the driver or explained what caused the crash. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department says its investigations bureau includes a unit that handles traffic fatalities. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, "As of 7/21/2026, Kansas has 172 traffic fatalities in 2026 (a 17.70% decrease compared to the same date in 2025)." The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) is a nationwide census that provides NHTSA, Congress and the American public yearly data regarding fatal injuries suffered in motor vehicle traffic crashes, according to NHTSA.
