El Paso — A late-night crash along Dyer Street has claimed the life of 79-year-old Lorenzo Sanchez, who died at the hospital after being struck by an SUV while crossing the busy corridor Friday night. The collision happened near the 4600 block of Dyer at about 10:42 p.m., and police say Sanchez was crossing outside a marked pedestrian area when he was hit.
According to KFOX14, the vehicle involved was a 2017 Cadillac XT5 traveling south on Dyer, and investigators say the driver is not facing charges at this time. The station also reports police statistics indicating this was the city's 26th traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 33 at the same point last year.
Where the crash occurred
The collision unfolded in the central El Paso corridor around the 4600 block of Dyer, a heavily traveled north–south route that blends neighborhood streets with steady through traffic. As outlined by the El Paso MPO, Dyer is slated for pedestrian and sidewalk upgrades, a planning move that highlights existing gaps in walking infrastructure along the roadway.

El Paso's Special Traffic Investigations unit is reviewing the crash, looking at factors such as sight lines, speed and the conditions under which Sanchez was crossing. The department told KFOX14 that the driver is not facing criminal charges, and the investigation remains open as detectives sort through the evidence.
