A Farmington Hills murder suspect who vanished in 2001 is back in Michigan custody after years on the run overseas. Authorities say 44-year-old Edgardo Luis Perez, long tied to the disappearance and killing of local resident Gordon Machek, was flown back to the state and is scheduled to be arraigned at 11 a.m. today in the 47th District Court in Farmington Hills.
Captured in Guatemala, the extradition moved forward
According to The Detroit News, Perez was taken into custody in Guatemala and returned to the United States on Friday. Guatemalan outlet La Hora reported that a Guatemalan court authorized his extradition after he accepted transfer in March and that he had been detained in late February.
Cold case details and missing remains
Investigators say Perez first met Machek at a health club, then was invited to the victim’s home weeks later. Machek was reported missing in October 2001, and police determined he had been killed, according to the Farmington Hills Police Department. The department’s cold-case information and local reporting note that Machek’s remains have never been recovered.
Local coverage described blood evidence inside the house and the disappearance of a large black steamer trunk that investigators suspected might have been used to move a body. That trunk has still not been located, Fox2 Detroit reported.
Charges and arraignment set for Friday
Oakland County prosecutors originally charged Perez with felony murder in 2003, and federal authorities later sought him on a warrant alleging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, ClickOnDetroit reported.
He is expected to be arraigned at 11 a.m. Friday in the 47th District Court in Farmington Hills, and Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott and FBI Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan are scheduled to hold a news conference following the hearing, The Detroit News reported.
Unanswered questions remain
The case drew national attention over the years and was featured on “America’s Most Wanted,” which kept Perez’s image in circulation as investigators chased leads, according to TVGrapevine. Friends and relatives have said the disappearance devastated the victim’s inner circle, and local reporting noted that some loved ones died before the case was resolved, TVGrapevine reported.
What comes next
After arraignment, Perez will remain in custody unless bond is posted, and authorities said they will provide more detail at a scheduled press conference. The Farmington Hills Police Department is asking anyone with information to call its command desk or submit tips through the city’s cold-case page.
