Indianapolis is in for a bit of weather whiplash today, with patchy fog hanging on this morning before scattered showers and thunderstorms bubble up this afternoon. Highs top out near 86°F, and while the storm coverage is only about 40% for any one spot, any slow-moving cell could briefly dump heavy rain and make for a soggy, stop-and-go ride home.
Morning Fog And The Commute
Fog should gradually lift by around 9 a.m., but drivers in low-lying spots and along river valleys may see thicker patches with visibility dropping to around 1 mile. According to the National Weather Service discussion, lingering moisture and leftover debris from recent fireworks are helping the fog hold on a bit longer than usual, so it is worth building in some extra time for the morning drive.
Afternoon Showers And Thunderstorms
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are most favored from midday through the early evening, with the best shot at rain in the mid-afternoon and early evening hours. These are not expected to turn severe, but slow-moving storms could briefly overwhelm drains and lead to minor street flooding, along with a few gusty winds and bursts of heavy rain. Most spots will see less than a tenth of an inch of new rainfall, though localized pockets could pick up more under any downpour that parks overhead.
Late Week Outlook
A stronger frontal system is projected to swing through in the middle of the week, boosting the odds for more widespread rain from late Thursday into Friday and raising the threat of heavier totals in some neighborhoods. That potential late-week soaking and the uptick in flood risk were laid out in our earlier Hoodline piece, Soaking Skies Set to Drench Indy.
Bottom line: ease off the gas in the fog, steer clear of standing water later on, and keep tabs on updates before heading out. Check the latest from the National Weather Service along with local traffic or airport alerts if you are traveling today.
