A former student is facing criminal charges after a threat rattled Henderson Middle School in Jackson, with officials saying the alleged warning targeted both an individual and the campus itself. The school district has confirmed the investigation, but nearly every detail that would explain what happened remains under wraps.
In a notice posted by the Butts County School System, officials said Henderson Middle School administrators learned of a threat against someone at the school as well as the school as a whole. Because the allegation originated with a former student, the Butts County Sheriff’s Office began investigating, and the former student has since been charged.
The district’s notice does not identify the former student, give an age, describe how the threat was made or quote what was allegedly said. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, officials also have not disclosed the exact charges, whether the person was arrested or whether the threat led to a lockdown, evacuation or other disruption at the school.
District Promises Full Prosecution
Interim Superintendent Will Rustin said the district intends to prosecute the former student to the fullest extent of the law. He also said student and staff safety remains the district’s top priority and thanked local public safety officials for their response.
For now, the public record establishes only that a threat was reported, the allegation involved both a person and Henderson Middle School, and a former student has been charged. The lack of information about the timing, wording and intended target makes it impossible to assess publicly how authorities evaluated the seriousness of the threat.
Georgia Has Added School-Specific Threat Offenses
The legal backdrop has also changed in Georgia. The Office of Gov. Brian Kemp said a 2025 school-safety law created separate offenses for a terroristic threat of a school and a terroristic act upon a school, though it is not known whether either provision is involved in this case.
Additional clarity would have to come from the sheriff’s office, prosecutors or court records. Until then, school officials are asking the community to take comfort in the district’s stated precautions while the criminal case moves forward.
