A Fourth of July gathering in rural Clark County turned deadly when a utility-terrain vehicle crashed on private property, killing two Woodland men at the scene. Fire District 10 crews and Clark County Sheriff’s deputies responded and pronounced both men dead. Authorities identified the victims as Scott Russell, 59, and Walter Holmes, 57.
According to KOIN, deputies were called to the 9000 block of NE Spurrell Road on July 4 after a side-by-side UTV overturned on Russell’s property. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office told KOIN the UTV “became airborne after traveling over an elevated portion of the driveway and impacted the lawn with the front bumper before rolling over.” Fire District 10 crews found both men unresponsive, and they were later pronounced dead, the report said.
Medical Examiner’s Findings
Per the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office, both men sustained blunt-trauma head injuries. The medical examiner will complete official cause-and-manner determinations as part of its routine case processing. The office reviews unexpected and non-natural deaths in Clark County and provides documentation to investigators.
Investigation and Next Steps
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash and has not yet said whether impairment, speed, or a mechanical problem played a role. Investigators are expected to examine the UTV, the driveway and surrounding property, and any witness statements before completing a report. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.
The double fatality underscores the risks that come with off-road vehicles, particularly on steep or uneven driveways and other private terrain. Officials said additional details will be released as the investigation moves forward.
