Chandler police officers were involved in what officials called a "critical incident" Friday night near Scottsdale Road and McKellips in Tempe, prompting a heavy response from multiple agencies. Investigators shut down nearby streets, combed the area for evidence, and worked into the night. Authorities told broadcasters there was no ongoing threat to the public and confirmed that no Chandler officers were hurt.
Video provided to Arizona's Family appears to capture a volley of gunfire. The clip shows a timestamp of 7:53 p.m. and includes an audible radio transmission of "998," a code commonly used to signal an officer-involved shooting. Neighbors and local crews reported a large law-enforcement presence as the scene was secured.
What officials said
Chandler Police labeled the event a "critical incident" and kept details tight, saying only that the case remains under active investigation. Detectives told FOX 10 Phoenix that no officers were injured and reiterated that there was no danger to the public as they continued to process the scene.
Other agencies on scene
Scottsdale Police confirmed they assisted with the Chandler officer-involved shooting response, and Tempe police told reporters the situation involved only Chandler officers, according to Arizona's Family. Local outlets reported traffic restrictions in the area while investigators worked late into the evening.
How investigations usually proceed
According to the City of Tempe, serious officer-involved incidents in the East Valley are often handled by the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team so that an outside agency leads the criminal investigation. Tempe Police Department guidance states that Mesa Police detectives typically conduct the investigation and that completed case files are then forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.
As of early Saturday, it was not clear whether any civilians were injured. Local outlets reported traffic restrictions and limited access around the area, per ABC15. Authorities have not released any suspect descriptions and say they plan to provide further updates as the investigation moves forward.
