What started as a robbery at a store on H Street NE ended with a suspected thief in the hospital with a gunshot wound to his buttocks and six people in handcuffs after a sweep of a nearby apartment Monday evening, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers were first called out for reports of a shooting Monday evening. After canvassing the area, they eventually found a man with an apparent gunshot wound who was conscious and breathing, and DC Fire & EMS took him to a nearby hospital. The wounded man, who police believe had been involved in the earlier armed robbery, was located more than two hours after the initial call, and officers had suspects stopped on scene later that evening, DC News Now reports.
How Police Say The Robbery Went Down
Police reports reviewed by WJLA state that three people between the ages of 18 and 22 walked into the H Street NE store posing as customers. When an employee confronted them, at least one of the trio pulled a gun and a struggle broke out. During the fight a shot was fired, hitting the victim, and witnesses told police the suspects bolted to a waiting black sedan and took off with stolen merchandise.
Apartment Check Leads To Six Arrests
Later that evening, officers went to an apartment on the 1800 block of Kendall Street NE and, with the property owner's permission, searched inside and recovered two firearms and found six people in the unit, DC News Now reports. All six were arrested, and the Metropolitan Police Department told WJLA it believes two of the people taken into custody are connected to the H Street robbery. Detectives say the investigation is still active.
