San Francisco woke up to mostly clear skies this morning, with many bayfront thermometers hovering near 60°F. The day is shaping up to be a split personality situation: sunny, breezy afternoons that warm up inland while the waterfront stays cool, all while a heat advisory and late-night high tides quietly complicate plans. Low-lying bayshore streets, parking lots and parks could see minor flooding during several late-night high tides this week.
Afternoon Heat Inland, Cool Coast
Highs in the city are expected to top out near 78°F today, while inland neighborhoods climb into the 80s and 90s. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for many interior Bay Area zones from 10 AM to 10 PM, urging extra caution for older adults and people working outdoors. Nighttime temperatures will offer little relief in some spots, which could increase cumulative heat stress through Wednesday. Late-night high tides are also on the watch list, with the San Francisco tidal gauge forecast to spike roughly 1.8 feet above normal around 11:55 p.m. on July 14 and about 1.5 feet above normal at 12:48 AM on Thursday, according to NWS San Francisco.
Afternoon Winds and Marine Advisories
Winds are expected to pick up through the afternoon, with a west-southwest breeze generally in the 2 to 12 mph range and gusts up to about 18 mph. That will mean noticeably breezy conditions on exposed routes and along the waterfront. Small craft advisories remain posted for portions of the offshore waters, and mariners should be ready for choppier seas into the weekend.
What To Watch And How To Stay Safe
If you have evening plans along the Embarcadero or other low-lying bayshore roads, build in extra time and avoid driving through standing water. A road that looks like it has just a shallow puddle can conceal deeper hazards. Keep children and pets well back from the surf line, skip walking on jetties and piers during high tide, and check local closure notices before heading to the shoreline. Anyone who is heat-vulnerable should look for cool public spaces during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, and call 2-1-1 for information on nearby cooling centers.
