Two men were killed Friday morning after a semitrailer and a minivan collided on Chicago's Far South Side, according to police. The deadly crash unfolded around 9:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of East 130th Street in the Hegewisch neighborhood, when a semi making a left turn was rear-ended by a southbound Dodge Grand Caravan. Both men inside the Caravan were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Police said the semi had been traveling east on 130th Street and tried to make a left turn when the Dodge Grand Caravan slammed into the back of the rig. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit responded to the scene and is leading the probe. Authorities shared only limited information early Friday, with these initial details reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Major Accidents Unit Leads the Probe
CPD’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit handles complex crash reconstructions and has previously been assigned to high-profile hit-and-run and fatal collision cases, according to Streetsblog Chicago. Investigators typically document detailed scene measurements, examine vehicle damage profiles and review any available surveillance footage to piece together a timeline. That process can stretch over several days as officers go through evidence and interview witnesses.
Where Things Stand
Authorities have not released the victims' names, and police said no additional injuries were reported. The two men were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in Hyde Park; UChicago Medicine lists its main campus at 5841 S. Maryland Avenue. Officials did not immediately provide further information about the crash, per UChicago Medicine.
