A printed farewell notice is taped to the doors and the lobby-level storefront at 629 W. 57th Street sat unlit on Wednesday, marking an abrupt shutdown just over a year after the tavern opened to serve Hell's Kitchen residents and passersby.
The closure was first spotted and reported Wednesday by W42ST, which described the note on the door and noted that the restaurant had opened "just over a year" ago. The outlet reported that City Tavern's operators did not provide an immediate statement about the shutdown.
Conflicting Signals Online
Despite the paper farewell, City Tavern & Table's online presence has not yet caught up to reality. The restaurant's official website and its Resy reservation page still list service hours and continue to accept bookings, creating a noticeable mismatch between the darkened storefront and its digital listings.

Short Run At The Base Of VIA 57
The Durst Organization announced the restaurant's arrival in April 2025, describing the 6,864-square-foot space as an "ideal addition" to the 57 WEST campus. The developer's press release credited Chef Ed Cotton with the menu and pitched the tavern as a neighborhood gathering spot beneath the Bjarke Ingels-designed building, per The Durst Organization.
Another Vacancy For The Pyramid
The closure adds to recent tenant churn at VIA 57's retail podium. Earlier this year, the LOOK Dine-In Cinemas location at VIA 57 also shut its doors, as noted on Cinema Treasures. The pattern has left the pyramid's commercial frontage as a mix of active shops and newly vacant spaces, raising questions about what operators and the landlord will do next.
