An early-morning crash on U.S. Highway 51 in Amite left a 72-year-old pedestrian dead after he was struck near Ponders Quarters Lane, according to Louisiana State Police. The man, identified as Robert Baker, was hit at about 1:20 a.m. on July 3.
Troopers say a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling north on U.S. 51 struck Baker. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt. As part of the standard investigation, troopers collected routine toxicology samples from both the driver and Baker, according to WGNO.
Where it happened
The collision unfolded on a stretch of Highway 51 that has already seen its share of tragedy this year. In March, an Amtrak train slammed into a car at the Ponders Quarters crossing, killing one person and reigniting worries about safety along the corridor, as reported in the Highway 51 smashup.
Investigation underway
Louisiana State Police Troop L is leading the investigation and says the crash remains under active review. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the incident or who has dash-cam video from the area around the time of the crash to contact state police, per WGNO.
Safety reminders
State troopers regularly urge pedestrians to stay visible at night, avoid walking in travel lanes and limit distractions, noting that these basic steps can reduce the risk of being struck. For broader guidance on pedestrian safety and ongoing outreach, see the Louisiana State Police.
The Tangipahoa Parish community has seen multiple serious roadway incidents this year, and authorities say they will release more details on the Highway 51 crash as the investigation moves forward. Officials are asking anyone with information to reach out to state police so investigators can complete their work.
