A Shelby County Sheriff's Office jail transport van was hit in a hit-and-run crash on westbound Interstate 40 just past the Summer Avenue exit early Thursday morning, leaving several inmates with minor injuries and tying up traffic during the morning rush.
Crash details and response
According to FOX13 Memphis, an unidentified vehicle struck the Shelby County Sheriff's transport van shortly after 8 a.m. and then fled the scene. The sheriff's office said several inmates suffered minor injuries and that "all inmates and staff" were taken to the county jail complex for evaluation and treatment.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office lists the downtown jail's main address as 201 Poplar Avenue, where medical screening and follow-up care were conducted after the crash. Deputies and Memphis Fire Department crews responded to the scene and moved those on the van for further evaluation.
Injuries and traffic impact
Memphis Fire Department crews treated people with minor injuries at the roadside before they were taken either to the jail's medical unit or to nearby hospitals as needed. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
Westbound lanes of I-40 near Summer Avenue slowed as first responders worked the crash scene and investigators documented the damage, leaving commuters with delays well into the morning rush.
Investigation and legal notes
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is investigating the hit-and-run and is asking anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from that stretch of I-40 to contact detectives, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
Leaving the scene of a crash that results in injury can be prosecuted as a felony under Tennessee law, according to FindLaw. People with tips can reach the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at (901) 222-5500, per the agency's contact page.
Transport safety in Memphis
Inmate transport on Memphis-area interstates has already drawn scrutiny this year. In June 2024, a prisoner broke out of a transport van and was struck on I-40, according to coverage of a brief escape from custody. Reporting by Action News 5 on that earlier incident prompted calls for stronger safeguards during prisoner transports.
Officials say any policy changes will be considered after investigators finish their work on this week's crash.
