Early Saturday morning, a fire ripped through a vacant, two story row of commercial buildings at 1224 S Hope St in Downtown Los Angeles, but by later in the day the Los Angeles Fire Department said the blaze had been put out. Firefighters first tried an interior attack, then pulled back into a defensive posture when conditions worsened, before returning to offensive operations to fully knock down the flames. The department reported no injuries and said nearby buildings were successfully protected from catching fire.
According to LAFD on X, the incident was logged as INC#0085 and first came in at about 1:04 a.m. Crews declared a knockdown at 1:54 p.m. The alert lists the units assigned, including Engine 10 and Battalion 1, and notes that companies stayed on scene afterward for overhaul and a cause investigation.

Hope Street Has Seen Multiple Blazes
This is not the first time flames have hit the 1200 block of Hope Street this year, and the run of incidents has raised concern about abandoned and previously burned properties along the corridor. The pattern drew extra attention after a July 10 knockdown at the same address, and the Los Angeles Times reported a major May fire at 1225 S Hope that kept crews on scene for hours. A recent Hoodline piece on the neighborhood's push for faster inspections highlighted both the July 10 incident and the scrutiny now focused on the block.
What Officials Are Doing Next
Per LAFD on X, LADOT, LADWP and LAPD assisted at the scene, while the Department of Building and Safety was called out to inspect the structure during overhaul. The alert categorizes the fire under the Central Bureau and Council District 14 and notes again that nearby exposures were successfully protected while crews worked to determine how the blaze started.
Investigators have not yet determined a cause, and crews stayed on site for several hours handling overhaul and evidence collection, according to Citizen. Authorities reiterated that there were no injuries and said city agencies will continue their review as activity at the scene winds down.
