Kansas City woke up Monday, July 20, 2026, to clear skies and steamy air, with temperatures already near 81°F and humidity close to 79 percent. By this afternoon, forecasters say the mercury will jump into the upper 90s and the heat index could push to around 107°F, which is the kind of heat that can turn an ordinary errand into a risky workout if you are not ready for it.
Heat Advisory Blankets The Metro
A Heat Advisory covers much of the metro from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT on Monday, July 20, 2026, while portions south of I-70 stay under the advisory through 7 p.m. CDT Tuesday. The alert warns of dangerous apparent temperatures and has been posted by the NWS Kansas City/Pleasant Hill.
What Monday Will Feel Like
Forecasters expect sunny skies and a high near 98°F with a light southwest breeze. Heat index values this afternoon could climb into the 105 to 107°F range, making it feel much hotter than the thermometer suggests. Overnight, temperatures only slip into the upper 70s and low 80s, which means very little relief once the sun goes down.
The National Weather Service spells it out plainly: "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors." In other words, treat this like serious heat, not just another hot Midwestern summer day.
Where To Cool Off
The city is urging residents who do not have reliable air conditioning to take advantage of public cooling options, including community centers, libraries and partner locations. The City's CoolKC program helps coordinate resources for vulnerable residents and transit riders, according to the City of Kansas City.
Heat Break On The Horizon
The ridge of heat is expected to flatten by midweek. Tuesday will stay hot, with a high near 95°F, although humidity should slowly ease. By Wednesday, conditions look noticeably cooler, with highs in the mid 80s.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible from late Tuesday into Wednesday night. A better chance for more widespread rain is expected late Thursday into Friday, which should finally deliver more lasting relief from the steamy start to the week.
