The money is aimed at ramping up manufacturing capacity, workforce training and startup support in the region’s biologics cluster. According to the Kansas City Business Journal, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded the $34 million as part of its federal Tech Hubs program. U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran expressed support for the Tech Hub effort and its potential benefits for the region's bio and medical work.

The Economic Development Administration designated KC BioHub as one of 31 Tech Hubs in 2023, a status that opened the door to implementation funding like this latest award. That designation makes the consortium eligible to seek federal support to scale up regional manufacturing capacity.
