A roof became the unlikely endpoint of a Kansas City, Kansas, incident Thursday afternoon when a man wanted on a Johnson County felony warrant surrendered after evading a traffic stop and hours of negotiations. He climbed down from an apartment building and was taken into custody without further escalation.
According to KCTV5, Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department officers tried to serve the warrant shortly before 11 a.m. The suspect allegedly evaded a traffic stop before officers found him on the roof of an apartment building near 5th and Washington Boulevard. Negotiators Talked Him Down From The Roof
Police said the man was unarmed when officers located him, but he remained on the roof while KCKPD negotiators worked for several hours to de-escalate the standoff. The Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department brought in a ladder for the surrender.
The suspect eventually climbed down voluntarily, according to officials cited by KCTV5. Officers met him on the ground with handcuffs and a bottle of water before taking him into custody.
The underlying Johnson County warrant and any additional charges connected to the arrest were not immediately detailed. The standoff ended peacefully; KCTV reported the suspect was unarmed.
