Kyo Matcha is about to make Greater Boston’s matcha map even greener, with two new cafés planned for Cambridge and Boston. The expansion will give the Japanese dessert chain a larger regional footprint beyond its Brookline shop, including a more leisurely tea-house concept for its first new location.
The Cambridge café is slated to open before the end of 2026 at 580B Massachusetts Avenue, while a second Boston location is expected sometime in 2027, according to What Now Boston. Both stores will be operated by local franchisee Jaclyn Nguyen, who opened Kyo Matcha’s Brookline location in spring 2024.
Kyo Matcha’s lineup spans matcha lattes, teas, boba drinks, slushes, caffeine-free beverages, matcha ice cream, cheesecakes and specialty cakes. The company’s official website also highlights its roll cakes and signature towel cake, an airy crepe cake filled with whipped cream and shaped to resemble a neatly folded towel.
Cambridge Café Will Lean Into Slow Tea Culture
The Cambridge outpost is planned as a larger space inspired by traditional Japanese tea houses, with an atmosphere designed to encourage guests to linger rather than simply grab a drink and disappear into the Red Line fog. Nguyen told What Now Boston that the café will offer single-cultivar matcha sourced from the Uji Matcha Supply Factory in Japan, with the tea hand-whisked in front of customers.
That more deliberate format could help Kyo Matcha stand apart in a crowded local tea-and-dessert scene, where brands are increasingly selling an experience alongside the beverage. The Cambridge location’s planned tea-house layout also gives the chain room to showcase its Japanese-inspired desserts in a setting that feels closer to a sit-down destination than a standard boba counter.
The timing comes as other matcha concepts are pushing deeper into the Boston market. Hoodline recently reported on viral matcha brand byChae’s Newbury Street café, while another tea-room concept is preparing to open in Cambridge’s Harvard Square. Kyo Matcha has not yet revealed the address of its planned Boston shop or announced opening dates beyond the current 2026 and 2027 targets.
