A Monday morning crash at 149th Street and LaGrange Road near Orland Square Mall left a pedestrian dead after a multi-car collision that shut down the busy intersection for hours. Emergency crews responded, closed the area to traffic while they worked the scene, and treated three other people for injuries described as minor to moderate before transporting them to nearby hospitals. The deadly collision has sharpened long-standing concerns about speeding and safety along LaGrange Road.
Police later identified the pedestrian as 66-year-old Antoni Luczynski of Palos Hills, according to Patch. That outlet reported that four vehicles were involved after one car left the roadway, and three of the vehicles suffered heavy damage. The intersection was closed for several hours and did not reopen until about 6 p.m., city officials told the publication.
“Yesterday, our community experienced a tragic loss when a pedestrian was fatally struck on LaGrange Road,” Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi said in a social media statement, adding that officers and partner agencies are conducting a thorough investigation, Patch noted. Rossi offered the department’s deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones.
What Investigators Found At The Scene
The Cook County medical examiner initially declined to release the victim’s name even as the investigation unfolded, the Chicago Tribune reported. Police said the crash remained under active investigation as officers temporarily shut down the intersection at 149th and LaGrange to document the scene and interview witnesses, according to the Tribune. No charges have been announced, and police have not publicly identified any specific contributing factors while detectives continue to review evidence.
Residents Had Warned About Speeding On LaGrange
Neighbors and social media commenters have for months flagged LaGrange Road as a hotspot for speeding and aggressive driving, and those complaints picked up again after the fatal crash, according to local coverage. Earlier this month, the Orland Park Police Department rolled out a high-visibility enforcement campaign on LaGrange Road aimed at curbing speeding and dangerous driving, Southwest Regional News reported. Local leaders said the effort includes stepped-up patrols and coordination with neighboring jurisdictions.
Where The Corridor Stands
Village planning records show that the LaGrange Road corridor and the area surrounding Orland Square Mall have been the subject of ongoing discussions about traffic signals and pedestrian safety, according to Orland Park Legistar documents. Officials have previously talked about signal work and pedestrian upgrades along US-45, also known as LaGrange Road, near 149th Street as part of wider traffic planning. Any long-term engineering changes would require coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local stakeholders.
Police say the investigation is still underway and have asked anyone with information to contact the Orland Park Police Department, the Chicago Tribune reported. This story will be updated as authorities release additional details.
