Las Cruces Public Schools is opening the 2026-27 school year with a new campus in the works, ongoing facility upgrades and a familiar first-week scramble over buses, security and air conditioning. The district says the planned school would serve students from sixth through 12th grade under one roof beginning in fall 2027.
The new campus is designed as a smaller learning environment that follows students across the middle- and high-school years. KVIA reported that district officials hope the model will eliminate the traditional transition between middle school and high school while giving students a more continuous support system.
District Wants Families To Help Shape New Campus
Las Cruces Public Schools is asking students, parents, employees and community members to weigh in on the school's mission, identity and educational priorities. According to Las Cruces Public Schools, the survey includes questions about college preparation, career and technical education, early college opportunities, personalized learning and student belonging.
The online survey is scheduled to remain open through Thursday, with community meetings and focus groups planned for the fall. The district has not yet announced a final campus name, attendance boundaries or a detailed construction timeline for the new school.
First Week Brings Transportation And Facility Updates
The district's first week began Monday, and officials say transportation is moving smoothly while security screenings remain in place. District back-to-school information lists school supply resources and notes that LCPS continues to provide basic classroom supplies for kindergarten through fifth-grade students, including pencils, glue sticks, tissues and wide-ruled paper.
LCPS is also working through early-year issues including power outages and air-conditioning problems, according to the district's update to KVIA's back-to-school report. The district advisory council for parents is returning as another avenue for families who want a say in district decisions.
Mayfield Renovation Remains A Major District Project
The new 6-12 campus is unfolding alongside a much larger renovation plan at Mayfield High School. Las Cruces Public Schools has estimated that the Mayfield work could cost about $200 million, with design expected to begin in fall 2026 and construction phases projected to stretch into the early 2030s.
The district has also highlighted recently completed bond work at Desert Hills Elementary, including a new kindergarten wing, a multipurpose room and changes to the parking and traffic flow. The improvements were funded through voter-approved bonds and were detailed by the school district after a ribbon-cutting ceremony last year.
For families, the immediate focus is getting through the first weeks of the new school year, but the district is already asking them to help define what comes next. The feedback gathered this summer and fall could shape how Las Cruces approaches a campus meant to keep students connected from sixth grade through graduation.
