A woman was killed Thursday night after a Brightline train struck her in Fort Lauderdale, according to officials. Emergency crews were called to the tracks just south of West Broward Boulevard at about 9:20 p.m., where they found the victim dead at the scene. Police have launched an investigation into the collision and said additional details would be released when available.
As reported by WPLG Local 10, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and police responded to the scene and confirmed the woman’s death. The outlet noted that West Broward Boulevard was shut down in both directions while investigators worked, and drivers were urged to use Davie Boulevard or Sunrise Boulevard as alternate routes. Authorities did not immediately release the victim’s identity, according to the initial report.
Brightline Safety Record Under Fresh Scrutiny
The crash adds to a long list of fatal incidents along Brightline’s corridor that have already drawn scrutiny from local officials and reporters. An investigation by the Miami Herald and WLRN documented dozens of deaths since Brightline began service and pointed to gaps in fencing, crossings and other protections along the route. Brightline says it is investing in a three pillar safety program focused on education, enforcement and engineering, and has highlighted recent federal grant funded upgrades on its Brightline press page.
Traffic Snarled As Investigators Shut Down Key Artery
West Broward Boulevard remained closed while investigators processed the scene, triggering detours and delays in the surrounding area. Drivers were directed to follow posted detours onto Davie Boulevard or Sunrise Boulevard as crews worked, and officials warned of lingering slowdowns on nearby roads. WPLG Local 10 reported the closures in its initial coverage.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision. Hoodline will update this story as officials provide more information.
