Louisiana is quietly holding on to roughly $1.2 billion in unclaimed property, and state officials just sent out a fresh batch of money to people who may not even know they are owed. On June 12 the Treasury mailed more than 44,600 checks worth about $6.5 million in total to residents in Louisiana and beyond. The pile includes everything from old payroll checks and dormant bank accounts to stock certificates and life insurance proceeds, and officials estimate the average claim comes in at roughly $900. State representatives say about one in six Louisiana residents has some sort of unclaimed property waiting to be claimed.
State used address match to send checks
According to the Louisiana Department of the Treasury, the June mailing followed a data match with the Department of Revenue that updated addresses and helped clear out a backlog under a law that allows the two agencies to share that information. Treasury communications quoted State Treasurer John Fleming urging people who get legitimate checks to cash them: "It is your money; we want you to claim it." The department says the address match and automatic mailings let it return money in many cases without making people file a separate claim first.
How to see if you’re owed
Louisiana residents can search the official portal at LaCashClaim.org or call the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division at 1-888-925-4127 for help. According to WGNO, the June distribution included checks sent to every parish, roughly 44,614 checks totaling about $6.5 million, mirroring the figures released by the state. WGNO also reports the department mailed claim packets to some people with larger balances in the roughly $5,000 to $90,000 range, since those bigger amounts typically require extra documentation to verify ownership.
Watch out for recovery scams
Treasury officials and consumer-protection experts warn that legitimate returns will never ask for an upfront fee or demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. Those are classic red flags for a scam. The Federal Trade Commission lays out common "refund and recovery" schemes and explains how to report shady offers. If you receive an unexpected check or a message about unclaimed money and you are not sure it is real, double check through the Treasury portal or the FTC resources before sharing any personal or financial information.
