A man is in critical condition after a car struck him in Phoenix's Maryvale neighborhood early Saturday, a violent overnight crash that pulled detectives into the intersection and left nearby residents rattled. Officers were called shortly before 3 a.m., and the man was taken to a hospital with life‑threatening injuries.
Police responded to the area of 67th Avenue and Indian School Road, where they say the pedestrian was outside a marked crosswalk when he was hit, according to Arizona's Family. The driver stayed at the scene and spoke with investigators while officers documented evidence and worked to piece together what happened. Arizona's Family also reported this was the third serious pedestrian crash in Phoenix in just two days, following deadly collisions near 7th Street and Thomas Road and at 15th and Clarendon avenues.
Intersection long flagged as high‑risk
Indian School Road in west Phoenix has been singled out for years as one of the city's most dangerous corridors. The segment surrounding 67th Avenue sits on a high‑injury list, and an investigation by AZ Law Now and the Road Safety Action Plan found dozens of crashes causing deaths and serious injuries along the stretch from 91st to 39th avenues.
Federal money is in hand, but fixes won't be immediate
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Phoenix about $24.96 million through its FY2023 Safe Streets and Roads for All program for the "ReVISIONing Indian School Road" project, according to federal grant records. USDOT outlines the scope of the work, and city planning documents show the project is still in design, with construction not slated to start until 2028. City project files detail the safety measures under consideration.
Phoenix police told Arizona's Family they have not yet released the victim's identity and that the case remains an active investigation. Officials say updates will be provided as evidence is processed and if any charges or additional findings are announced.
Investigators are asking anyone who saw the crash or has video from the area to contact Phoenix police through the city's non‑emergency Crime Stop line or to reach out to Silent Witness. The City of Phoenix provides Crime Stop and reporting information, and Silent Witness takes anonymous tips online and by phone.
