A routine traffic stop in Maverick County turned into anything but routine when a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper discovered a 6-year-old child hidden inside the vehicle, according to the agency. The driver was arrested on a smuggling of persons charge, and troopers at the scene located and recovered the child from the vehicle.
The South Texas region of the Texas Department of Public Safety shared video of the stop on X on July 23, saying the incident took place July 3 in Maverick County. The post notes that the driver was arrested for smuggling of persons and urges anyone with information about the case to call 9-1-1. According to TxDPS - South Texas Region, the child was found as part of the trooper's regular interdiction work in the border area.
Maverick County sees repeated interdictions
Trooper interdictions and stash-house searches have become a familiar scene this year across the Del Rio and Eagle Pass corridor, with state and federal agencies reporting a steady flow of arrests and seizures. A July 10 overnight interdiction in the county resulted in nine people being detained, as per Hoodline, and the Texas Department of Public Safety has issued multiple press releases detailing stash-house operations in the same region.
Penalties when a child is involved
Smuggling of persons is a felony under Texas law, and the stakes climb quickly when a child is part of the alleged offense. Under Texas Penal Code §20.05, transporting or concealing a person under 18 can bump the charge to a higher-level felony and, in many cases, carries a minimum prison sentence of 10 years if the defendant is convicted.

The arrested driver now faces state smuggling charges, and it will be up to prosecutors to decide whether to file additional counts or ask federal authorities to take the case. Similar smuggling arrests from the Del Rio sector have at times been handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas, which has previously obtained multi-year prison terms in alien-smuggling cases.
