Neighbors in Memphis’s Parkway Village neighborhood are still trying to process the loss of 3-year-old Joseph Martinez, who was found dead Monday morning after what police describe as a custodial interference the night before. Memphis police say Joseph’s biological father took the boy from a Southbridge Street home without permission and has since been detained. The department has launched an active death investigation and has not released a cause of death.
Police: How the Case Unfolded
According to Memphis police, it started Sunday night, July 19, with a custodial interference call at a home on the 3200 block of Southbridge Street. Investigators say the child’s father left with Joseph without authorization. Officers report the father returned to the residence before 8 a.m. Monday but came back alone, which triggered a City Watch that went out at 9:22 a.m. and was canceled at 9:52 a.m. as detectives began pursuing leads.
Police later said they developed information that Joseph might be in the 100 block of North Front Street. Officers went to that location and found the toddler deceased, the department told Action News 5.
Neighbors React
On Southbridge Street, where residents say people generally look out for each other, the news hit especially hard.
“That’s terrible,” longtime neighbor Hattie Briggs said, adding to Action News 5 that people on the block try to keep an eye on one another’s families.
Jimmy Bell, who lives nearby, told reporters he was shaken that someone would take a child and then do harm. He said he wishes there had been a way for someone to intervene before the situation turned tragic.
Investigation Status
Police say Joseph’s father is in custody, and investigators have classified the case as an active death investigation. No cause of death has been released as detectives continue working multiple scenes, WSMV reported.
Officers shut down parts of North Second Street near Pear Avenue for hours while they collected evidence and conducted interviews. As of now, police have not announced any charges and are urging anyone who may have information to contact the Memphis Police Department.
Legal Status
Authorities have not released details about Joseph’s cause of death or any formal charges. The case will move through investigative and prosecutorial review before any charging decisions are made.
