Tipton County deputies say a months-long hunt for suspects in a deadly Brighton home invasion has led them to Memphis, where a 20-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday as the sixth person charged in the case.

Sheriff Shannon Beasley identified the latest suspect as Carlos Montez Johnson Jr. Detectives say they picked him up early Tuesday morning at his Memphis apartment, then booked him into the Tipton County Jail. Johnson is being held without bond on multiple felony counts.

According to WMC Action News 5, Johnson is charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, especially aggravated burglary, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony and theft. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

Months-long probe

Investigators say the arrest caps months of detective work tying Johnson to the break-in. The case has been active since late December, and detectives kept working leads through the winter as they tried to round up everyone believed to be involved.

Scene and earlier arrests

The break-in unfolded on the 2500 block of John Hill Road in Brighton on Dec. 29, 2025, when deputies arrived to find 22-year-old Corey Webb suffering from gunshot wounds; he later died, officials said.

WMC Action News 5 reported that two juveniles and an adult suspect were arrested shortly after the shooting, and additional suspects were tracked down or charged in the weeks that followed. Johnson is the sixth person to be brought into the case.

Legal status and next steps

Johnson remains booked at the Tipton County Jail while prosecutors prepare formal filings, and authorities say the investigation is ongoing. Local officials say detectives will keep chasing leads as the case winds its way through the court system.

Tipton County detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 901-475-3300 or submit tips to 901-475-3307, according to reporting from WBBJ and the sheriff’s office. Investigators are particularly interested in residents who may have relevant video footage or witnessed suspicious activity and are urging them to come forward.
