Memphis’ Prive restaurant has drawn a hard line at 30, turning away anyone younger than that while requiring every guest to show identification at the door. The new cutoff means even 21- to 29-year-olds who could previously get in are now out.
The policy changed this week, according to FOX13 Memphis. Prive says the age restriction is intended to enhance the dining experience, and the restaurant told the station there are no other new rules besides the 30-and-over requirement. Guests must show a valid government-issued ID, even if they are already over 21.
What Changed At Prive
Prive had welcomed guests 21 and older for more than a decade, making the new rule a noticeable reset for the Memphis restaurant and lounge. Its own website still describes the business as a fine-dining, family-owned spot serving cocktails, seafood, burgers and live entertainment, suggesting this is a change at the front door rather than a broader overhaul of the operation, as outlined by Prive’s official website.
The Policy Comes With A History
The decision also lands with a difficult history. On March 29, 2023, a fight inside Prive led to a shooting outside the restaurant that killed two people and injured five others, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. The federal agency said Memphis police investigators linked the gunfire to an altercation inside the club.
That deadly shooting is part of the backdrop, but the immediate reason cited for the new policy is broader: Memphis police told FOX13 there have been 13 different incidents involving the establishment over the past year. The restaurant appears to be betting that a narrower, older customer base will bring a calmer atmosphere without adding a long list of new restrictions.
Memphis Has A Growing Grown-Folks Lane
Prive is not the only Memphis venue making its mature-adult audience explicit. Salt Bar & Bistro says women must be at least 25 and men at least 30 to enter, while The Rockin Chair advertises a 35-and-older rule after hours.
Some Memphis diners told FOX13 they welcomed Prive’s move. Reginald Bennett said, "That’s the way it needs to be right now," while Lakesha Bennett described an older crowd as more "laid back" and "chill."
For anyone planning a visit, the practical takeaway is simple: being 21 is no longer enough at Prive. Guests now need to be at least 30 and carry valid government-issued identification before they can get through the door.
