A Memphis man is behind bars on a $100,000 bond after police say he kidnapped and assaulted a woman at knifepoint in Orange Mound, then took off in her SUV. Investigators say the woman managed to escape from a vacant apartment, later picked the suspect out as her attacker, and told officers he also stole her car, bank cards and phone before they tracked him down.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by Action News 5, Memphis police were called on July 13 to the area of Pendleton Street and Arlington Avenue. The victim told officers she had been looking for an apartment when a man approached her, claiming he worked maintenance. The affidavit states he then forced her into a vacant unit, tried to sexually assault her, hit her several times and held her at knifepoint before she got away. During the struggle, officers say, he grabbed her purse. Police report the suspect left in the woman’s 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and officers later stopped the SUV and found the victim’s bank cards in the suspect’s pocket.
