A West Metro Fire Rescue firefighter was seriously injured Wednesday morning after falling during a technical rescue training exercise in the Denver metro area and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The exercise quickly became an emergency of its own shortly after 11 a.m.
According to The Denver Post, the firefighter was hurt during the exercise and transported for treatment. The initial report did not identify the firefighter or provide additional details about the fall.
Technical Rescue Training Can Involve High-Risk Scenarios
West Metro Fire Rescue says on its official special teams page that its specialized crews complete hundreds of hours of training each year. The department's technical rescue team responds to challenges including collapsed buildings and rope rescues in Colorado's rocky terrain.
The agency's wellness division describes firefighting as physically demanding and dangerous, with annual fitness testing that includes stair climbs, hose work and victim rescues. Those requirements reflect the physical demands crews face both during training and on emergency calls.
The firefighter's condition beyond the initial critical designation, along with the circumstances that led to the fall, was not immediately available. West Metro Fire Rescue had not released an additional public update in the initial reporting.
