A Monday afternoon shooting at a Lithonia strip mall left one person seriously injured, according to DeKalb County police. Officers rushed to the 1500 block of Wellborn Road after emergency calls about gunfire and found a single victim suffering from serious injuries. First responders quickly cordoned off the strip mall while detectives searched the shopping center for evidence.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, SKYFOX footage captured yellow crime-scene tape stretched across the front of the plaza, and officers described their initial call as a "person shot." The outlet reports that authorities have not yet confirmed the victim's identity or age and have not said what led up to the gunfire or whether any suspects have been identified.
A wave of recent shootings in DeKalb
The incident in Lithonia is the latest in what has become a troubling run of violence across DeKalb County this month. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that suspected "celebratory gunfire" on July 4 left an employee of the DeKalb District Attorney’s Office critically injured. In a separate case on July 2, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution detailed a sleepover shooting that ended with two people dead.
Investigation underway
Investigators secured the strip mall and marked evidence at the scene as they worked the case, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Police have released only limited information so far while detectives continue to interview witnesses and review surveillance and other physical evidence.
