A late-night hit-and-run on DuSable Lake Shore Drive left a man in critical condition Wednesday, according to Chicago police. The collision happened in the 100-block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive and sent the pedestrian to the hospital in serious condition.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the crash occurred around 11:40 p.m. when a black vehicle sped through the traffic light and lane markings and hit the man as he crossed the roadway. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition. Police said the driver took off from the scene, and Area Three detectives have opened an investigation.
A dangerous stretch
DuSable Lake Shore Drive has seen several serious pedestrian crashes in recent years, including a fatal strike near the Museum Campus that shut down lanes for hours, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Those incidents have fueled debate over safer crossings and possible design changes. Proposals under the Redefine the Drive plan would reshape intersections and lakefront access to slow traffic and improve safety, Axios reports.
Police appeal for video or tips
Investigators are asking anyone who saw the collision to come forward and to save any dash-cam or surveillance footage that might show the impact or the fleeing vehicle. Tips can be submitted anonymously at CPDTIP.com or by calling Area Three detectives at (312) 744-8263, according to CBS Chicago, and police say any video could be crucial in tracking down the driver.
