A late-night ride on Indianapolis' near-west side ended in tragedy early Thursday when a scooter rider was killed in a single-vehicle crash at West 16th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, police said. Officers responded just after midnight, and emergency crews pronounced the rider dead at the scene as the intersection was shut down and traffic rerouted into the morning commute.
According to WISH-TV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the intersection shortly after the crash was reported, and the station said its News 8 crew was headed to the area. Early reports from the outlet did not include the victim's name or details about what might have led up to the wreck.
WRTV reported the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. and that police said the scooter was the only vehicle involved. The station said the rider was declared dead at the scene while investigators worked to piece together how the crash occurred.
Investigation Under Way
IMPD's traffic unit remained at the intersection gathering evidence and speaking with possible witnesses, per WISH-TV. Authorities had not released the victim's identity or a cause of the crash as of the latest updates.
