Today's killing at a North Oakland bus stop left a man dead on the sidewalk and a neighborhood on edge, police said.
The Oakland Police Department said the victim was found on the 4300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way near 43rd Street and was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had suffered at least one gunshot wound, according to KTVU.
Officers were dispatched just before 7:30 AM after reports of a person down and arrived to find the wounded man, police said. Oakland Fire Department crews had reached the bus stop first, and the victim was declared dead there, the station reported.
Around noon, officers entered a lawn-mower store across the street from the bus stop, and an ambulance was called in shortly afterward. Medical personnel were seen carrying a stretcher into the shop, but authorities have not said whether that activity is connected to the shooting.
Scene and recent violence
Neighbors said the killing feeds into a recent run of early-morning and transit-area shootings across Oakland, and the nerves are starting to show. Earlier this week, a lakeside slaying near Lake Merritt drew a full homicide response as detectives combed the area for clues, per Hoodline.
Residents and community advocates have been urging anyone with information about these incidents to step forward while investigators process scenes and review video footage.

Detectives have opened a homicide investigation into the bus stop shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821, according to KTVU.
Police have not yet released the victim’s name, pending notification of family members, and said the circumstances of the killing remain under investigation.
