A viral clip zipping across El Paso social media early Wednesday shows an SUV sitting in a Socorro canal with law enforcement vehicles lining the bank, raising more questions than answers about how it got there. Authorities have not said if the crash followed an official pursuit.
Local station KTSM reported that an Instagram video appears to show the SUV in the canal as U.S. Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety units crowd the scene. According to KTSM, crews were out at North Loop Drive near Bauman at about 7:30 a.m., and officials had not said whether anyone was hurt or taken into custody.
What the videos show
Another social media clip credited to the FitFam account appears to show Texas DPS vehicles chasing an SUV along Horizon Boulevard. So far, officials have not confirmed that the chase video and the SUV in the canal are connected. In a brief comment to KTSM, a Texas DPS spokesperson said, "I will have details about it later today." Investigators are reviewing video and talking to witnesses as they piece together what happened.
Why canals are dangerous
Local coverage and emergency crews have long warned that valley canals and levees can become deadly when seasonal water releases ramp up, and currents strengthen, as a recent race against the current highlighted, as per Hoodline. The Texas Department of Public Safety has documented cases, sometimes called "splashdowns," in which vehicles end up in waterways during pursuits and says those incidents make rescues and evidence collection more difficult, Texas DPS notes. Recent canal recovery coverage has reinforced why fire and water-rescue teams run these drills every summer.
What officials say and what to watch
State and federal agencies at the scene said they plan to release more information once investigators finish reviewing video and other evidence. As of now, there have been no public confirmations of injuries or arrests. Authorities are asking anyone with useful footage or information to contact local law enforcement. The situation remains fluid, and news outlets are expected to update the story as official details come out.
