A 22-year-old man is behind bars after his roommate was stabbed 26 times at an RV park in Anthony, New Mexico, in an afternoon attack that left the victim running naked to the manager’s office before collapsing. The man survived after being rushed to University Medical Center in El Paso, according to police and hospital records. Authorities say the suspect later drove himself to a Doña Ana County sheriff’s substation and reported what had happened.
The county’s online inmate roster lists an Alejandro Mustafat as booked on July 15, 2026 (booking number 2600005582), confirming that a 22-year-old by that name was taken into custody. The entry appears on the Doña Ana County inmate roster.
According to KFOX14, Mustafat was arrested on July 15 and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on aggravated-battery and assault-with-intent charges. First responders quoted him as telling officers, “Yes, I brutally stabbed him,” though he later told investigators he had acted in self-defense after being attacked in his sleep. On July 22, a district judge ordered that Mustafat remain jailed, saying he posed a danger to the victim and to the public.
Police documents outline the attack
Police documents reviewed by KFOX14 state that the stabbing happened around 2 p.m. on July 2 at the Anthony RV Park. The victim was reportedly asleep on a couch when he was awoken and allegedly beaten before being stabbed.
Investigators documented 26 stab wounds spread across the victim’s arms, chest, back, neck, head, ear and nose. According to the documents, the victim told officers he had no idea why he was attacked.
Mustafat told investigators he believed a Gatorade he was given had been poisoned and that the drink made him dizzy. He said he pulled a pocketknife in self-defense after being attacked while sleeping. He also claimed he later learned the victim had tried to sleep with his girlfriend, a claim the victim denied to police, according to the same records.
Court status and how to help
Mustafat remains in Doña Ana County custody as the case moves through the courts. A trial date does not yet appear in public records.
