Four men have been arrested and charged in connection with an allegedly brutal assault and kidnapping near a popular playground on Nantucket on Thursday afternoon. Police say the victim was found on Essex Road near Winter Park with his arms bound by an extension cord and bleeding from his mouth and nose.
Authorities identified the suspects as Calray Brown, Dijon Hazel, Newton Lawrence and Alvin Barnett. Each faces a kidnapping count along with dozens of assault charges, including multiple counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to The Boston Globe. An online court docket lists the four men for arraignment on Monday, and the report did not disclose their ages or where they live.
Police Say Video Shows Group Attack
State troopers who arrived first at the scene saw the man with an extension cord tied around his midsection, according to the police report. "Based on the provided video, all four individuals were actively engaged in preventing the man from fleeing and attacking him," Officer Justin R. Johansen wrote, as reported by The Boston Globe.
Witness Video, Alleged Weapons
Investigators obtained a witness's video that reportedly shows the four men beating the victim in the park parking lot. The victim told officers he had been jumped, dragged to Essex Road against his will, punched and tied up with the extension cord.
He also told police he believed one of the suspects struck him with a hammer. The report said Newton Lawrence appeared to swing an 18‑inch wooden stake at the man's head while Hazel and Barnett allegedly punched him and Brown held him. Police wrote that the man had facial scrapes and was bleeding from his nose and mouth.
What Comes Next in the Case
Prosecutors have filed a raft of counts against each defendant, and the online docket shows the quartet is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday. The police report did not identify a motive. The investigation is ongoing and officials have not released further details.
