Naval Base San Diego just picked up a new comfort-food recruit: Wienerschnitzel has opened its first restaurant on a U.S. military base, sliding into the Navy Exchange food court earlier this month with its full lineup of chili dogs, Junkyard Dogs and Tastee-Freez shakes. The familiar orange-and-yellow brand is using the tightly packed food court as part of a broader push into nontraditional spots like big-box stores and travel hubs.
The company says the new unit sits in the Navy Exchange food court at 2260 Callagan Highway, Building 3187A, on base, and lists the location and hours on its online store finder, Wienerschnitzel. The opening was also announced in a company press release on PR Newswire.
Why The Base? A Built-in Customer Pool
The San Diego location is aimed squarely at Navy Exchange authorized patrons at one of the West Coast's largest concentrations of active-duty personnel. "Opening our first restaurant on a military base is an exciting milestone for our brand and another example of how Wienerschnitzel can thrive beyond the traditional restaurant model," Chief Development Officer David Winter said in the release PR Newswire.

The NEX counter is serving the chain's full menu in a compact food court footprint: Chili Cheese Dogs, Junkyard Dogs, chili cheese fries, jalapeño poppers, burgers, and soft drinks are all on deck, according to the brand's location page. Wienerschnitzel currently operates about 340 franchised restaurants across 13 states and reports more than 30 additional units in development, a growth target noted by trade outlets Restaurant Dive.
