A Friday night on Pittsburgh’s North Shore ended in violence when a man was beaten and robbed outside a bar shortly after the Pirates’ extra-innings loss. Family members identified the victim as Phillip Grayson Jr., who is in the intensive care unit with multiple facial fractures and broken ribs. Loved ones say they are pleading with anyone who saw the attack to come forward.
Grayson’s relatives told WPXI the trouble started inside McFadden’s on North Shore Drive when he accidentally spilled part of his drink on another customer. The argument that followed moved outside, where family members say it escalated into a two-versus-five fight after Grayson left the bar. He told investigators the men took his wallet and his shoes. Investigators declined to release suspect photos and would not say how far along the case is.
“We have no idea who they are at this time, which is why we’re reaching out and asking the public for their help,” Rev. Phillip Grayson Sr. told WPXI. He added, “Turn yourself in because we’re not going to stop until we find you.”
After the game
The confrontation unfolded as fans were spilling out of PNC Park following the Pirates’ 10-inning, 3-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, according to the game box score. The extra frames meant a later finish and a busy North Shore as crowds poured into nearby bars and restaurants. Baseball Almanac reported the extra-innings result.

The City of Pittsburgh’s public-safety blotter lists prior serious incidents outside McFadden’s, including an aggravated-assault entry in 2024, highlighting how quickly a busy game night can tip into trouble. City officials and investigators are asking anyone with video or information about the attack to contact Major Crimes at 412-323-7161 so tips and footage can be reviewed. The City of Pittsburgh maintains guidance for submitting tips.
Pittsburgh police say the investigation is ongoing and have not announced any arrests. Grayson’s family says they intend to keep pressing for answers as investigators review security footage and follow up on leads.
