A roommate dispute in Northeast El Paso spiraled into deadly violence Thursday evening, leaving one man dead and another in jail on a murder charge, according to police.
Authorities say 41-year-old David Daniel Hall was arrested after the shooting death of his roommate, 33-year-old Joshua Lopez, at an apartment complex on the 3600 block of Fred Wilson Avenue. Lopez was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Hall was later tracked down and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
Police documents reviewed by reporters say the confrontation began around 7 p.m., when Lopez, reportedly holding a knife, knocked on a neighbor’s door and asked to be let inside. He allegedly told the neighbor that Hall was “extremely intoxicated.” Moments later, the neighbor saw Hall step out of the unit with what appeared to be blood on his chest and a cut on his left palm, according to CBS4.
What investigators say
Neighbors told detectives they watched Hall repeatedly ask Lopez if they were “good” before Hall allegedly pulled a gun and shot Lopez in the chest. Lopez was taken to the hospital but did not survive. Police say Hall initially fled the scene, but officers later found him and took him into custody.
According to jail records cited by the station, Hall’s bail had not been set as of Friday morning.

The killing adds to El Paso’s running homicide tally for the year, although overall numbers are down compared to last year. A July 6 news release from the El Paso Police Department reported eight murders in 2026 through early July, compared with 15 during the same period in 2025. Detectives with the Crimes Against Persons unit continue to work each case and say community tips remain a key part of solving these investigations.
