Argument Outside Clinic Escalated Into Gunfire
The confrontation unfolded March 14 outside Planned Parenthood in Overland Park, where a security guard reported an argument and said one person appeared to be armed. KSHB 41 reported that Matthews had been arguing with a woman who was being taken to the clinic when protesters became involved.
Police said Matthews displayed a gun, pointed it toward one of the protesters and then fired before returning to the vehicle. Officers later located him stopped on a ramp from Roe Avenue to eastbound Interstate 435, where he was taken into custody.
The investigation also uncovered a troubling detail involving children in the car. The Johnson County Post reported that officers found two guns and marijuana in the vehicle, along with a child who was not properly secured in a booster seat.
Surveillance Video Helped Build The Case
Surveillance footage later showed Matthews pointing a gun at protesters, according to the Johnson County Post's affidavit summary. The report said he fired a single shot into an earthen berm as he drove away.
The clinic briefly locked down and stopped services after the disturbance. The case began with an argument in a politically charged setting and led to criminal charges tied to a firearm and a child’s safety concerns outside the clinic.
