Neighbors described a chaotic scene as ambulances and squad cars flooded the area, sirens cutting through the night while authorities sealed off surrounding streets and detectives got to work.
Police confirmed the shooting took place near 103 N. Portland Ave, and that the victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, according to News12 New York. A neighbor’s video shared with the station shows EMS crews wheeling a man onto a stretcher as officers press bandages to his face, with what appears to be blood visible on his shirt. By early morning, North Portland Avenue was still shut to traffic while investigators combed the pavement for evidence.
Whitman Houses' recent incidents
The Walt Whitman Houses complex has seen multiple shootings in recent months, including a deadly April incident that Patch reported occurred inside an apartment at 75 Cumberland Walk. Other nonfatal shootings in and around the development have also drawn coverage, and residents have not been shy about voicing safety concerns.
